An Afternoon With The Innocent

An afternoon with the innocent isn’t what it sounds like. It’s really not for the faint of heart or aged, unless they’re having a really good day. It starts out with a wonderful sense of freedom as you get pulled into his world, amazed by the way he sees EVERYTHING. And he’s so fresh and new that every thing around him is fresh and new. Nothing is mundane when you’re with the innocent.

He can’t settle in one place; he has to keep moving, exploring even the smallest of areas until he’s flushed out all its mysteries. But they weren’t mysteries before. Until he discovered them, then suddenly you’re right there with him, seeing everything as though for the first time. Just as quickly he’s made another discovery. And made it clear I needed to go along as he pulled my shirt singing, “Mimimimimi!” I wasn’t sure today if I was Gigi or if he’d renamed me Mimi. It didn’t matter to him as long as I tagged along through his every whim.

He’s learning so much sometimes I wish he’d slow down! I was summoned to help him open a door. As soon as the knob turned he snatched my hand away shouting, “No! No! Let me do it!” It took a couple of tries and a little more help but he finally did it.

Wait... when did he start using complete sentences?

Telling him it’s time for a diaper change caused running and giggling, as though it was the most natural thing to do. He didn’t care that he was stinky. More giggling and wiggling as the bottom was cleaned and the diaper was changed, then a sudden flip and off again to explore before running back and grabbing my shirt.

This time it was the kitchen and the chocolate chip cookies. He moved behind to push me to the counter, while pointing at the prize he’d chosen. He walked away, happily munching, until he realized I wasn’t following, then he quickly turned, grabbing my shirt, and took me on another adventure.

Horses had been fed, meals consisted of microwaved leftovers and housework was forgotten as Asher and I left the world outside for the afternoon and explored a home which had seemed so small before. In his innocence everything is always so exciting!

For an entire afternoon, my world revolved around him. After his Mama picked him up I realized I needed to let her know he hadn’t eaten much supper....

... but he had had three cookies.

That’s when I realized... I am finally a Grandma! And why God chose me to bless with this little innocent creature, I will never know, but I will be eternally grateful.
